The chairman of the parliamentary caucus, Vytjie Mentor, confirmed that Goniwe
had been accused of sexual harassment and that the woman had also reported the incident to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Baleka Mbete.
The ANC women‘s caucus has demanded his
immediate suspension pending disciplinary procedures.The caucus has recommended to the party‘s secretary-general, Kgalema Motlanthe
, that Goniwe
be suspended immediately .
Motlanthe is expected to raise the issue with ANC leaders today.Goniwe has been under increasing pressure lately, with a sale-in-execution to settle a long-standing Eastern Cape debt cancelled two weeks ago, and a sheriff of the magistrate‘s court repeatedly attempting to serve a demand for child maintenance on him in Parliament.ANC MPs said Goniwe was becoming increasingly unpopular and that female MPs in particular wanted him out.
