Maurice has lived in Pickering for over 35 years. First moving to Ward One in 1975, he lived in the Amberlea Community for 22 years and founded the Amberlea Rate Payers Association where he played a major role in building its parks and community schools. In 1997 Maurice, Anne and the family moved to the rural area of Ward 3 where they owned and operated the "Duffins Beck Equine Farm", raising horses and farming organic hay. Through 10 years of farming and a rural lifestyle, Maurice Brenner has an appreciation for the difficulties and challenges facing Rural Pickering and an appreciation for the need to preserve our environment and natural resources for future generations. In 2005, the family moved to the Pine Creek Community that abuts Pickering's wide life corridor where they live today.
Having experienced both urban and rural lifestyles, Maurice knows first hand the importance of ensuring a balanced approach to growth for Pickering, one that places the community and people first.
Maurice Brenner was a Pickering Councillor for 21 consecutive years representing Ward One. He was first elected in 1985 as the Local Ward One Councillor and again in 1988. In 1991 he was elected Ward One Regional Councillor and served the residents of Ward One and Pickering as an Acting Mayor and Interim Mayor as well as being appointed to chair many committees in Pickering and Durham Region.
Following the 2006 Municipal Election Maurice's role changed and became a Community Advocate. He has remained involved and has continued to provide a strong community voice in support of Stop the Stink, Saving Local Hospital Services, Community Safety, and many more issues that are highlighted throughout this web site.
For over 25 Years, Maurice Brenner has been a passionate Community Voice both on and off Council.
Maurice is a graduate of Ryerson, Social Services and has expanded his learning through programs such as Leadership Training through the York University, Executive Education Centre, Schulich School of Business. For over 35 years he has worked in various Community Service roles. Maurice is a member of the Senior Managers Team of one of Canada's largest Social Housing landlords where he specializes in Human Rights, Conflict Resolution and Mediation.
Maurice Brenner is committed to "a Community Vision for Pickering one that will be Sustainable for future generations to come. He believes in a "Total Community Vision", and wants to restore that vision to the Office of Mayor.

Human Rights Specialist Maurice Brenner to Address Conference on Anaphylaxis
...
It's a step, but not good enough, says Maurice Brenner, a human rights specialist in Toronto and another presenter.
Why? While it deals with keeping children safe at school (things like taking steps to avoid cross contamination and requiring teachers to know how to use an EpiPen), it fails to guarantee that children will feel included.
Across Ontario, most schools are good at keeping kids with food allergies safe, says Brenner.
...
That implies they then have an unfair advantage over other students, says Brenner.
That's not the case. In fact, an accommodation (like requiring teachers to monitor kids' lunches for allergens) simply ensures the kids have the "same rights as everyone else to be included in a safe environment," he says.
It's when people misunderstand, and take a what-about-my- rights attitude, that hostility erupts.
And it happens. Brenner has heard parents react by saying: "What about my kid's right to eat a peanut butter sandwich at school?"
A couple years ago, Brenner was involved in helping a group of children, all having deadly food allergies, file complaints with the Ontario Human Rights Commission against their school north of Toronto.
...
The kids with allergies were blamed and told, "It's your fault we lost pancake Tuesday," Brenner says.

Former Pickering councillor turned community activist Maurice Brenner has gotten on board to see what he can do to help the Tennants. He accompanied the couple to the Whitby Ontario Court of Justice Tuesday and was able to convince the court to adjourn until late October.
In the meantime, Mr. Brenner will either request a mediated settlement through an agency such as the Community Justice Alternatives for Durham or request council to review the position of the City based on the age of the bylaw (originally written in 1962 and amended in 2004).
"Having read it, much has changed and I would doubt the Council of the day nor today intended it to be applied in this fashion," Mr. Brenner said in an e-mail.
