Maurice Berkowitz, MD, is board certified in internal medicine, medical oncology and hematology. He received his medical degree from the University of Southern California Keck School of Medicine. He completed both his internship and residency at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and served as Chief Resident. Dr. Berkowitz was also Chief Fellow in hematology and oncology at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Olive View/UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Berkowitz is affiliated with several organizations including the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Society of Hematology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association and the California Medical Association. He actively participates in clinical trials, and is a member of the Southwest Oncology Group and the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group. Currently, Dr. Berkowitz is Assistant Clinical Professor of Hematology and Oncology at UCLA Geffen School of Medicine. Dr. Berkowitz is committed to excellence in comprehensive health care for men and women, in a partnership that honors patient individuality and dignity. His approach involves understanding the patient's health care needs and implementing state-of-the-art techniques and compassionate care. "The treatment regimen is tedious," says Maurice Berkowitz, M.D., an oncologist/hematologist.
"A breast cancer patient may be on medications for one to three days, with different drugs each day, and right after that, they may need shots to stabilize their blood counts, so the labs must be followed." Determining appropriate dosing is also difficult, he explains, as a complex formula involving body surface area must be taken into account. "To prevent errors, we always have the nurses review the doses, and the EHR adds another layer of safety," Berkowitz says.
