Maureen Callahan
Maureen Callahan Vice-President, Academic Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning With over 30 years of experience in the Ontario college and institute system, Maureen Callahan has held leadership positions that have all left a positive lasting impression, one that can be felt in all colleges, as well as system-wide. Having worked at Seneca College of Applied Arts and Technology, George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology and Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Ms. Callahan is often described by her peers as intelligent, compassionate, committed, always striving for excellence and engaging and motivating to those around her. She possesses a tireless willingness to lead and engage in cross-college initiatives aimed at improving the ways in which colleges fulfill their mandate. While Vice-President Academic and Student Affairs at George Brown College of Applied Arts and Technology, Ms. Callahan was the driving force in the creation and implementation of the Centre for Learning Innovation and Academic Development, which focused on distance education and alternative delivery. The Centre helped George Brown College become the leading provider of distance education programming in Canada and has won national and international acclamations. As Vice-President Academic at Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning, Ms. Callahan actively engaged community stakeholders in initiatives designed to advance Sheridan's ability to better serve its local communities. Ms. Callahan undertook the challenge of developing a strategic plan for the Davis Campus in Brampton. Her rigorous approach involved research into city and regional demographics, including levels of education and the ratio of live/work residents. One of Ms. Callahan's most recent initiatives involved the new provincial policy on General Education and Generic Skills, scheduled for implementation in the fall of 2005. Ms. Callahan chaired the Working Group charged with researching and developing this policy, which focuses on developing skills to meet the current and future needs of college graduates and employers. "There is clear evidence that employers want graduates who are able to think critically, work collaboratively, solve problems and continue to learn and adapt as the world and their workplace changes," says Ms. Callahan. Throughout her years in the education system, Ms. Callahan has consistently found inventive ways to achieve her professional goals as well as the institution's goals. Ms. Callahan's expertise and advice have been summoned time and time again in service to a wide-range of cross-college and provincial initiatives. She has held many volunteer positions such as: Under Ms. Callahan's guidance, Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning is well on its way to becoming a "learning college" - where success is measured on the quality of learning experienced by students. "Maureen has the ability to accept new ideas even if it would not be her initial choice to go in that direction. She puts trust in people and gives them room to move. Maureen never loses sight of the capabilities of her colleagues and stakeholders, and is always seeking input and feedback." "Maureen has always believed that she can serve her college better if she stays involved on a provincial level. Cindy Hazell, Vice-President Academic, Seneca College "I have never encountered an academic leader with a more evident passion for, and in-depth understanding and appreciation of, the business of teaching and learning. Her powerful combination of skill, knowledge and character has made a profound impact on the instructional enterprise at Sheridan, in every conceivable way. For Maureen, promoting excellence in Ontario colleges is job one. "Vice-Presidents across the system have often turned to Maureen both personally and collectively, as she has constantly displayed not only insight into issues, but also an ability to articulate them and work them through to positive conclusions.
