Water leaked onto the streets from both breaks, according to Matt Stanley, vice president of Beckley Water, and both problems began Thursday night.
Crews were working Friday to repair the lines, Stanley
"The one (line) in Beaver was 14 inches and the one on Robert C. Byrd Drive was 12," he
explained."These are major leaks and we were unfortunate enough to have two in the same night."
For Beaver, valves were turned off and hydrants were opened to flush the lines out. That had to happen in order for the pipes to be cut, according to Stanley
Water service was not turned completely off in Beaver or in Beckley
.With the exception of the federal building and the Beckley Police Department
on Prince Street, Stanley
said, water company workers were able to keep the water going to surrounding businesses.
Roads were kept open, but it was necessary to close a few lanes on Robert C. Byrd Drive.Traffic was flagged and traffic problems were considered minor, Stanley
"The public along with the businesses have all been patient," Stanley
