Having spoken all over the world, Rev. Welde is well equipped to give us a global perspective on missions. While broad in his ministry, his focus is direct and simple - he desires to see people come, one by one, to receive salvation from the Lord.Whether he speaks to few or to many, he is conscious that people only come to Christ on an individual basis. The exhilaration of seeing people with transformed lives is what powers this powerhouse of world missions.Born in Philadelphia, Matt grew up in Christian Endeavor, Youth for Christ and camp and conference ministries; these helped to shape his early years. After completing doctoral studies at William Carey International University, Rev. Welde served in a variety of positions. He was a pastor in Florida for 10 years and served at First Presbyterian in Norristown, PA from 1968 -1976.Starting in 1976 Matt served as Executive Director of Presbyterians for Biblical Concerns and editor of the Presbyterian Communique. For 13 years this work took him to Presbyterian churches, seminaries, colleges and governing bodies to lecture on church renewal and theological reformation. His next position was with the Presbyterian Center for Mission Studies (PCMS), an organization engaged in research and recruitment of cross-cultural workers to unreached peoples. (Unreached peoples are defined as those people groups who have no culturally relevant message of the gospel and where the population is less than 5% Christian.)Although world evangelization is an important part of his call, Matt feels the most effective church leaders are those native to the country and culture where they will be serving. In Africa and Indonesia, two areas where he has been very active, many lay evangelists are not trained in the essential doctrines of scripture.Through seminars led by Rev. Welde, church leaders gain a deeper knowledge of scripture and a more complete understanding of the Christian faith.Matt works with local leaders to follow-up on those who respond to invitations at his crusades. His life-long goal is to plant churches that are healthy and led by local believers.Rev. Welde is currently a member of the Presbyterian Order for World Evangelization (POWE) on assignment to the U.S. Center for World Mission. In this capacity, he has preached all over the globe, especially in countries in the 10/40 window, the area of the world where most of the people live that have never had the opportunity to hear the good news.Although he went to Argentina in the spring, Matt is staying closer to home this year to help his wife as she struggles with breast cancer that has returned.
