Questions followed about how back-up Matt D'Orazio would handle the offense.
Any doubts in D'Orazio were relieved immediately thanks to his eight-passing-touchdown performance in a Soul 37-point victory at Los Angeles in Week 4. D'Orazio kept the Soul offense clicking as Philadelphia followed with wins versus Tampa Bay and Utah and then at San Jose and Columbus to put them at a perfect 8-0. Matt D'Orazio had started the game for the Soul, but left the game in the third quarter with an ankle injury and did not return. D'Orazio was back for the game, but the grind of the season appeared to be taking its toll on the Soul. D'Orazio stepped in and continued to play at a high-level in leading the team to a 71-64 victory. Quarterback Matt D'Orazio continued his strong play as starter for the Soul, completing 17-of-25 passes for 184 yards and eight touchdowns in the title-game victory. Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII marked the first-time in the franchise's five-year history that the Soul played in the ArenaBowl, and they didn't disappoint. The Soul held on to a 59-56 victory over the defending champion San Jose SaberCats to win the Foster Trophy. Matt D'Orazio was named the ArenaBowl MVP for the second time in his career after completing 26-of-43 passes for 302 yards with seven touchdowns and one rushing touchdown.
