After graduating from Centennial High School, Reverend Kodani attended the University of California at Santa Barbara where he earned his degree in East Asian Studies. While at UC Santa Barbara, he became close with Reverend Art Takemoto of Nishi Hongwanji Buddhist Temple. Through Rev. Takemoto's influence, Kodani traveled to Japan to study Buddhism at Ryukoku University.

Using the funeral as an example of Buddhist ritual, Reverend Masao Kodani, a minister of the Jodo Shinshu or "Pureland" sect of Buddhism, will explain the Buddhist funeral, and the significance of the ritual to the Buddhist religion. Reverend Kodani will present an overview of the historical development of rituals in Buddhist practice, and the relevance of such rituals to day-to-day life in both a cultural as well as a religious context. The rituals comparative distinction from the Judeo-Christian-Muslim practices will be presented as well. A question and answer period will follow. Reverend Kodani is a much sought after speaker in the Southern California area. Come and enjoy his presentation and take in a docent led tour of the Sackler Gallery as well. Ekoji's Fall Seminar (on Saturday, Oct. 26 beginning at 9 a.m.) will feature Rev. Masao Kodani, the minister at Senshin Buddhist Temple in Los Angeles. Speaking on "The Historical Buddha and the Cosmic Buddha," Rev. Kodani will discuss the distinction between the Buddha in history and the Buddha as Infinite Light and Life, Wisdom and Compassion.
