Fourth-grade students in Mary Zane's art classes watched the visiting artist at work making elaborate, high relief wooden masks.
The program was offered through Margaritas Mexican Restaurants Education Outreach Program. Art teacher Mary Zane said the students also explored mask making and Mexican culture in art classes leading up to Friday's event. > "We had an introduction to Mexico and folk art," she said, indicating books, maps and photographs on display around the art room. "Then we generated all kinds of questions for Abeiro." The students are also in the process of crafting masks of their own. "They will be making large wildcats out of folded paper," Zane said.
