Mary Jo Monahan became chief executive officer (CEO) of the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) in January 2013.
In this role, Monahan oversees and works closely with the association's management team and is the main line of communication with ASWB's Board of Directors, as well as the face of the association to other organizations, regulatory boards, and the public.
Monahan's background includes clinical, organizational, educational, and regulatory experience as well as experience serving in a volunteer capacity with ASWB
from 1994 to 1997, chairing ASWB
's Disciplinary Action Reporting System Committee (now the Public Protection Database, or PPD) in 1995, and co-chairing ASWB's
Model Law Task Force (1996-97).
Monahan served on the Florida Board of Clinical Social Work, Marriage and Family Therapy, and Mental Health Counseling from 1991 to 1996 and was board chair in 1995 and 1996.
Prior to joining ASWB as CEO, Monahan was vice president of operations from 2010 to 2013 at Matthews Benefit Group, Inc., a third-party administrator of retirement plans.
She also was president and CEO from 2009 to 2013 of ICON Institute of Florida, LLC, a professional training center and consultation business that also provides clinical supervision and training to mental health professionals.
Both organizations are located in Tampa, Florida.
From 2003 to 2009, Monahan was president and CEO of Family Service Centers, Inc., in Clearwater, Florida, a $5.4 million social service agency.
Other leadership positions include serving on the national board of directors of the National Association of Social Workers
(NASW) from 1998 to 2001 and as president of the NASW
Florida chapter from 1988 to 1990.
In 2012 she was president of the board of directors at the Florida Council Against Sexual Violence and served on the finance council for Clearwater Catholic High School and the Mission and Community Service Council at St. Anthony's Hospital.
was the 2011 president of the Blue Ridge Institute of Southern Community Service Executives
Monahan was an adjunct professor in the School of Social Work at the University of South Florida for more than 22 years.
She earned her master's degree in social work at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee with a special concentration in clinical social work.
