In partnership with the Veterans Coordination Commission, we are pleased to present the July 2007 Veteran of the Month Recognition to Marvin H. Hale.
Marvin Hale grew up in Tennessee and entered the United States Air Force in 1955. After serving continuously for twenty-four years, Marvin retired in June 1979 at Ellsworth AFB with the rank of Master Sergeant (E7). One of the unique things about Marvin is that he served his entire career in the Chaplains Support career field. His duties within this field included financial, administrative and professional support of the Chaplains section. In the last year of his career, he was appointed First Sergeant for the 44th Combat Support Group, Headquarters Squadron. During this Air Force career, he served at several bases in the United States, Japan, Italy, Germany twice and Thailand twice.
Marvin's decorations/ribbons and medals include: Air Force Commendation Medal, AF Outstanding Unit Award w/1 device, AF Good Conduct Medal w/4 devices, Army Good Conduct Medal 1/1 device, national Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, AF Longevity Service Award Ribbon w/4 devices, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross w/Palm Unit Citation, and the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal. In 1961 Marvin qualified as an Expert Marksman on the AF Pistol Team and was a member of the Brookly AFB, Mobile, Alabama Base Honor Guard. While stationed in Southeast Asia, SSgt Hale set up an entire Chapel Administrative Section at a new base with a minimum amount of supplies and equipment. While stationed in Germany, Marvin qualified to receive the German Military Sport Medal that is presented very sparingly to individuals who are selected and who must participate/compete in areas of shooting, running and mountaineering. He also received the Presidents Sports Award for jogging over 100 miles.
Marvin Hale retired in 1979, enrolled in National Business College and received a BS degree in Business Administration. In 1984 Marvin started working at Target and retired in 2003. Marvin is married to Margit Schmid of Germany whom he met on a Volksmarch in 1975. Their family includes four daughters and twelve grandchildren. Marvin is a current member of the Eagles, a life member of the Air Force Sergeants Association and a life member of the Retired Enlisted Association. He faithfully serves on the finance committee of TREA and is a true international patriot who is dedicated to the ideals of the military retiree and the affects of government decisions on retirees. He is most proud of his military service record accomplishments, his family, his state and his city.
