Parent panel spreads word on special aid - 03/05/02

Marty Alwardt, director of special education for New Haven Community Schools, said the role of the committee is to educate parents about special-education rules, changes in the law and terminology. It also makes parents aware of district programs that could benefit special education students. "For kids in special education, college isn't always the option," Alwardt said."Sometimes, college isn't even in the plans. We want to make sure they are successful when they leave New Haven High School. "To do that, we have to provide a wide range of opportunities for them, from vocational training to job training. We're setting up a scholarship program for kids who want further vocational training and we help other parents who may be in need." About 130 of New Haven's roughly 1,200 students are classified as special education pupils, according to fall figures from the Macomb Intermediate School District. In addition to the state-mandated local committees, there is also a Macomb County Parent Advisory Committee which handles special education issues for the Macomb Intermediate School District.
