Marta Reynal-Querol is ICREA Research Professor at the Department of Economics and Business at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), which she joined in 2005. She is also an Affiliated Professor at the Barcelona Graduate School of Economics. She holds a PhD in Economics from the London School of Economics (2001) and a Master with Honors from Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF). She is member of the Editorial Board of the Journal of Conflict Resolution and the European Journal of Political Economy. She is also member of the Council of the European Economic Association (EEA). She is a Research Fellow of the Center for Economic Policy Research (CEPR). She holds an ERC Starting Grant obtained in the first call of the European Research Council. In 2011, she won the Banco Herrero Prize for the most outstanding Spanish economist under 40 years old. She worked at the World Bank between 2001 and 2005.
Prof. Reynal-Querol's research focuses on the causes of civil wars and genocides, conflict resolution and the aftermath of conflict; leaders and institutional reforms; aid effectiveness, and the economics of institutions. She has published in The American Economic Review, American Political Science Review, Review of Economics and Statistics, Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Growth, Journal of Development Economics, the European Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Conflict Resolution, Economic Letters among others.

Barcelona GSE Affiliated Professor Marta Reynal-Querol has been selected to receive a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC).

Professor Reynal-Querol, who is a Ramon y Cajal Researcher at the UPF as well as Research Affiliate at CEPR and CESifo, will use the grant to explore the causes, consequences, and prevention mechanisms of social conflicts. Her research project endeavors to develop institutional designs to prevent social conflicts, addressing some institutional dimensions that have not been considered yet.
