Marlena Duncan of Brandon is preparing for the upcoming Mississippi Celebration at the Mississippi Museum of Art in Jackson, a three-day presentation from April 10-12.The presentation will showcase Mississippi culture with an emphasis on visual art.Marlena, 28, a real success story, has been studying modern dance since she was 14.Right now, Marlena is pouring herself into the choreography which four of her company members will perform.Modern dance, she says, is the interpretation of life, trials and tribulations as well as successes, by way of movement that incorporates ballet, jazz, tap and even hip-hop.She's "hungry" for her passion which allows her to "show the audience a little piece of my humanity."Her vision, her artistry come alive through her dance.Marlena graduated from Southern in 2003.In 2004, she set out to live the dream in New York City where artistic opportunities abound. As we all know, the cost of living in New York is as high as its skyscrapers. The financial strain exhausted Marlena mentally and physically. In 2007, she returned to her close-knit family in Brandon. Her mother Sheila and her dad Bill along with sisters Michelle and Rankin Ledger staff photographer Melanie have been a big support. After returning home, Marlena went to work and opened her two businesses. There's no mistaking it.That girl has some kinda drive. And, she says, it's a real blessing to be back home.
