About Golf Hawaii [cached]
Like many great ideas Golf Hawaii had modest beginnings, but it didn't take long for the famed golf show hosted by Mark Rolfing to become one of the most successful series in sports television.? Rolfing, who first made his mark in television as an ESPN golf announcer and now works for Golf Channel on NBC, developed the idea for a golf and travel show after providing one-minute golf tips fora local Hawaii TV station, KITV-4. He expanded on that nascent premise to develop and produce Golf Hawaii, which began airing locally in January 1995. The Golf Hawaii television concept was developed further.
The list of PGA Tour players to sit down with Rolfing includes: Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jim Furyk, Ernie Els, Davis Love III, Sergio Garcia, Steve Stricker, Fred Couples, Stewart Cink, Lee Trevino, Tom Lehman, Paul Azinger, Fred Funk, Nick Faldo, Stuart Appleby, Corey Pavin, Hale Irwin, David Duval, John Daly, Ben Crenshaw, Greg Norman, Gary McCord, Justin Leonard, Peter Jacobsen, and Gary Player. One of the highlights of the series on ESPN included a 1996 Christmas show that featured interviews with Tiger Woods at the start of his career and Michael Jordan at the peak of his.
A native of DeKalb, IL, Rolfing played intercollegiate golf at DePauw University, where he was a conference champion and most valuable player. At DePauw he earned a Bachelor's degree in political science and went on to receive a Masters degree in Education from Northern Illinois University in 1973. In 1999, Rolfing was inducted into the DePauw University Athletic Hall of Fame.
Rolfing became a golf professional in 1974, competing on golf tours from Europe to Asia, before joining the Kapalua Resort on Maui. He built a solid career in sports marketing and event production in Hawaii. In 1985 Rolfing Sports, was created and grew into a management and consulting company producing Hawaii-based sporting events for national broadcast. Rolfing Sports productions include the PGA Tour post-season Lincoln Mercury Kapalua Invitational and collegiate basketball's Maui Classic.
While televising one of the post-season Kapalua tournaments ESPN discovered Rolfing's warm and friendly on-camera skills and quickly brought him into the world of sports broadcasting. After two years with ESPN, Rolfing became NBC's lone on-course commentator in 1988. After four years with NBC Sports, he signed with ABC in the fall of 1991 where he was an integral part of the ABC Sports golf team for six years before returning to NBC in 1997.
Now as a Golf Channel on NBC's award-winning golf commentator, Rolfing covers top golf events including the prestigious Ryder Cup, The PLAYERS Championship, The Master's and the U.S. Open to name just a few. ?? In addition to his on course duties Rolfing is a Contributing Analyst on the network's Live From programming, airing on-site from the game's biggest events, and on Morning Drive, Golf Channel's daily news and lifestyle show. Rolfing also serves as the host and content producer for NBC Sports Group's Road to the Ryder Cup series featuring in-depth conversations with Ryder Cup players, captains, and celebrities.
Over the past three decades, Mark Rolfing has become one of the leading forces in sports event marketing and production in Hawaii. Rolfing is a proud member of the Hawaii Golf Hall of Fame and continues to reside in Hawaii.
