"This procedure is fairly new and it's FDA approved for people like Maxine, who have severe aortic stenosis and are considered a high-risk patient for standard open-heart valve replacement surgery," said Mark Marbey, MD, Saint Vincent cardiovascular surgeon.
"This room is outfitted with the radiology and catheter devices found in a traditional catheterization lab, but it also serves as a fully equipped operating room should the patient not tolerate the TAVR procedure and require an immediate open-heart operation," commented Dr. Marbey. "We had to make a small incision between the patient's ribs in order to access the heart," added Dr. Marbey.

"It happens because we have people who are meticulous about the 200 other quality indicators that PHC4 doesn't keep track of, but we do," said Mark Marbey, M.D., Saint Vincent's chief of cardiovascular surgery.
Both Long and Marbey said the rates might be rising because heart surgeons are operating on older and sicker patients, while younger and healthier ones are often getting stents to open clogged coronary arteries. "The patients we see often have undergone previous cardiovascular procedures and have other (complications), such as high blood pressure," Marbey said.
