There are several reasons for the recruitment and retention challenges in Fort Erie: there is a significant nursing shortage across the country which is being felt in Niagara; many of the nurses who receive critical care training once recruited to the Constant Care Unit in Fort Erie choose to post to the NHS's three Intensive Care Units, where they can use their skills to the fullest.Compounding the situation further, many nurses are reaching retirement age and leaving nursing altogether.
"This situation is not unique to Niagara," says Dr. Jany.
