Badges, Biometrics Can Have Big Impact On Limiting Unauthorized Access to PHI

www.aispub.com [cached]

"Badges play a bigger role in security," says Mark Ellis, information security officer and data security analyst at Bellin Health, a health system in Green Bay, Wis. "We are trying to leverage badges to do a lot of different things."For physical access to facilities, a lot of [covered entities] have gone to proximity badges," Ellis says.Proximity badges typically are the shape and size of credit cards, and showcase the company logo and employee's name, picture and department.A little thicker than regular nametags, proximity badges have a battery built in, and it transmits radio signals that allow automated door unlocking when appropriate. Each badge is unique to the employee. It reflects the access the employee has been granted , which departments and during what days and hours."It's like giving someone a key," Ellis says.Bellin Health also uses proximity badges as a time and attendance system, Ellis says. There's a bar code printed on back that serves as a punch-in/punch-out time card for work. When employees enter and leave their departments at the beginning and end of shifts, they swipe their cards on time clocks to punch in and out of work, he says.
