The Honorable Mark Doolittle did much to preserve the history of the town.
Born in 1781 in Russell, Massachusetts, he graduated from Yale in 1803. He studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1807. In 1812, he entered his professional career in Belchertown and continued his practice until within a few weeks of death. He was a state senator, 1821-22 and represented Belchertown in the lower house of the legislature 1824-25 and 1825-26. He was a member of the Governor's Council in 1828-29. He was a great orator and many of his addresses were published. In 1852, he published a book entitled "A Historical Sketch of the Congregational Church in Belchertown, Mass". It was the home of Mark Doolittle, lawyer and author of the history of the Belchertown Congregational Church.
