Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso is working for the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA) as its Chief Executive Officer (director general) and President (Chairman of the Board) and he is a leading executive personality for space in Romania.
As an early science and technology professional he contributed to the establishment and leadership of the RomanianSpace Agency, the Institute for Space Science and the national research and development programs in space, aeronautics and security.
He is active in promoting international cooperation in space science and technology at the European Union, United Nations and international organizations.
He contributed to the development of a national research, industrial and political space community and managed the successful accession of Romania as a Member State of the European Space Agency.
Born on January 7, 1954, he followed the primary and high school education in Bucharest.He graduated in Physics at Babes-Bolyai University in 1982 with a diploma in general relativity theory.He worked since 1982 as a research scientist in the Institute for Electrical Engineering (ICPE) in Bucharest, developing inertial sensors andexperimental systems for weak fields measurements.
In 1988 he become the head of thelaboratory and joined in 1990 the Centre for Astrophysics and Space Sciences inBucharest to establish the Institute for Space Sciences.He supported the start of cooperation between Romania and the European SpaceAgency and the establishment of the Romanian Space Agency (ROSA).
Since 1993 hebecame executive secretary of ROSA managing also the research program.
Since theestablishment of ROSA as an independent organization in 1995 he become its firstexecutive director.In 1998 he was appointed as ROSA Chief Executive Officer and Vice-Chairman of the Board.Since 2003 Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso became President and ChiefExecutive Officer of ROSA.Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso was the builder of the present Romanian national space RTDprogram and a leader in the national research and development system.
Since his earlyleadership career he promoted and applied the concept of sustainable advancedresearch.
He was a member and vice-president of the Science Council for Space,Aeronautics and Defense since 2003.He was appointed as director of the first multi-yearspace program AEROSPATIAL for 2001- 2005.In 2004 he was the executive president ofthe Inter-ministerial group on Security Research.
During 2006 - 2009 he was a memberof the National Academic Attestation Council.
Since 2012 he is directing the STAR -Space Technology and Advanced Research program.
Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso conducted the two-decades process of joining Romania to theEuropean Space Agency (ESA).
After the signature of a second cooperation agreement in1998 he contributed to the development of the program for European CooperatingStates and joined Romania in 2006.
Since 2009 he led the official negotiations with ESAand in 2011 Romania became the second former socialist country member of ESA.Presently, Mr. Piso is the head of the Romanian Delegation to the ESA Council.t the level of the European Union, Mr. Piso was member and representative for variouscommittees and boards involving Space, Aeronautics and Security Research.
Heparticipated to the process of drafting the first European Space Policy in 2003.
He was amember of the European Security Research and Innovation Forum and in the programcommittees of the Framework Programs 6 and 7 of the EU.
Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso organized the Romanian participation in the NATO SpaceTechnology Advisory Group and conducted the organization of the first NATO spacespecialists meeting in Bucharest in 2006.
Since 2004 he is the representative of Romaniain the NATO Space for Peace and Security Committee.Since 1994 - 2013 Mr. Piso was the representative and head of the delegation ofRomania to the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.
In thisquality he contributed to the organization in Romania of the UNISPACE III RegionalConference for Eastern Europe (199), to the chairmanships of Romania for the Scientificand Technical Subcommittee and the Committee, to the work of the Action teams asNear Earth Objects and Sustainability.
A regional office for the UN-SPIDER disastermanagement initiative was established in Bucharest in 2008.
Since 1994 he is theNational Secretary for COSPAR and since 2007 the Romanian principal for the Group onEarth Observations.In 1994 he got the doctoral degree from University Alexandru Ioan Cuza in Iasi with athesis on space-time structure and in 1998 he received the position of researchprofessor from the Institute of Atomic Physics in Bucharest.
In 1999 he graduated assenior the National Defense College in Bucharest.
During the last decade he gavelectures on Space Technology in the Politehnica University Bucharest and GlobalSecurity at the Academy of Business Management in Bucharest.
Mr. Marius-Ioan Piso areas of science and engineering competence included generalrelativity, inertial sensors and nano-magnetic fluids.
He led more than 40 national andinternational research projects in science, micro-satellites, and knowledge management.
e is the main author of 21 patents in inertial and gravity sensors, opticalcommunication, nano-magnetic technology.
He published in journals as IEEE andAdvances in Space Research.
Mr. Piso was elected as a member of the International Astronautical Academy and as aMember of the Board of Trustees since 2007.In 2005 he was elected as a member of theEuropean Academy of Sciences and Arts.He was awarded by the President of Romania as a Knight of the Faithful Service Order in2003 and re-awarded as an Officer of the Order in 2008.Mr. Piso is involved in community leadership services, as Rotary Club Bucharest (since1997).
