Brooks comes to NBC 5 Chicago from WSB-TV in Atlanta, Ga. where she had been an anchor of the noon newscast and reporter for the 5 p.m. and 6 p.m. newscasts since 1996. Prior to WSB-TV, Brooks worked as a general assignment reporter for KTVI-TV in St. Louis, Mo. After her extensive work on the Midwest flood of 1993, she was promoted to weekend anchor.She also received an Emmy nomination for her coverage of the flood.She received another Emmy nomination for her investigative series examining sex offender sentencing in St. Louis County. From 1991-1993, Brooks worked as a general assignment reporter and morning anchor at WJKS-TV in Jacksonville, Fla. She began her television career at WABG-TV in Greenville, Miss. as weekend anchor and was promoted within six months to anchor of the weekday 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. Her first job in broadcasting was in radio at WGST, a news talk station in Atlanta, in the entry level type of job that exposed her to the long hours, hard work, and adrenaline rushes of newsgathering.She credits this experience with solidifying her desire to work as a journalist. ATLANTA , Even Marion Brooks didn't see this coming.For four years, Brooks hid her glitzy affair full of exotic trips with Atlanta then-Mayor Bill Campbell, she testified last week during his federal corruption trial.What Brooks, 39, didn't know is that she wasn't the married mayor's only girlfriend.Brooks said the affair continued when she left Atlanta in December 1997 to take an anchor position at WMAQ in Chicago.The couple broke off the romance in 1999, but it was briefly rekindled in 2001, she said.It ended with a trip to San Francisco, she said, where the mayor bought her a $2,400 coat.Brooks apparently didn't realize that Campbell had another long-term girlfriend, Jimenez.Kevin Hanna, who was selected by Campbell in 1997 to run the Atlanta Development Authority, testified that the city's chief operating officer, Larry Wallace, recommended Brooks for a public relations position.According to previous testimony by businessman Gabe Pascarella, who would book trips for the mayor, Campbell took several romantic trips with women, in particular Brooks or Jimenez.Prosecutors didn't dwell on any steamy details of Campbell's affair with Brooks, which included trips to Paris, Mexico, Las Vegas and Jamaica.Instead, they are trying to back up their contention that the mayor needed cash to support a lavish lifestyle of jet setting, high-stakes gambling and women.Brooks testified that Campbell paid for hotels, dinners and entertainment using cash , never credit cards or checks.Even when she asked for a loan for a down payment on a condominium, he handed her $16,000 in cash, she told the jurors.
