Dr. Marilyn Gates, Professor Emerita, and long time Associate Member of the Latin American Studies Program, received her M.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of British Columbia. She joined the Sociology and Anthropology Department at Simon Fraser University in January 1974 to teach peasant society and social change in the Third World. Dr. Gates' areas of specializations are Latin America, Iberia and the Mediterranean realm, having undertaken particularly extensive fieldwork in Mexico, Guatemala, Spain and Portugal. Research interests include Mexican agricultural policy, the Third World debt crisis, development project evaluation, environmental anthropology, (biosphere reserve management). and life story narratives.
Dr. Gates has published:
In Default: Peasants, the Debt Crisis, and the Agricultural Challenge in Mexico (Westview Press, 1993)
Currently, Dr. Gates is working on a book on Mexican environmental policy and practice and recording a life story narrative of "an ordinary Mexican."

Money is important, says Marilyn Gates, an anthropology professor at Simon Fraser University If green living cost less, more people would do it, she says.
"I think it reduces to economics by and large.People would do more if it wasn't a real sacrifice to them either economically or in terms of a busy day," says Gates."We'd all take public transit better if it wasn't going to waste a couple of hours instead of 20 minutes of our day."
Gates says society has come a long way in the past 20 years, but she worries it isn't enough.
