In honor of Women's History Month, we salute a wonderful sexuality educator and spiritual leader, Dr. Mariah Britton. Dr. Britton currently serves as the Founder and Chief Executive Officer for The Moriah Institute Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to youth development through Rites of Passage with a second focus aimed at building collaborations with seminaries and other faith-based institutions in the area of comprehensive sexuality education.

October 13 Rev. Dr. Mariah Britton (American Baptist) is the founder and chief executive of the Moriah Institute, which provides comprehensive sexuality training for seminarians as well as adolescents. She serves as a consultant to several churches as well as the United Church of Christ, Reformed Church in America and American Baptist denominations. An associate minister for youth and young adults at Riverside Church for 17 years, she earned a Ph.D. in family, marriage and human sexuality at New York University.

Rev. Dr. Mariah Britton, PhD Mariah Ann Britton currently serves as the Chief Executive Officer and Founder of The Moriah Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to adolescent development, sexuality education and spiritual awareness. In this capacity she designs Rites of Passage programs for youth as well as training for adult leaders; works with seminaries and other faith based institutions in developing comprehensive sexuality education courses.
From 1988 to 2005 she was a member of the Ministerial team of The Riverside Church in New York City. There she served as Minister to Youth and Young Adults. At Riverside, she was responsible for the direction of Christian Education and spiritual growth for youth and young adults which includes: Church School and worship for youth, Young Adult Ministries (YAM) Rites of Passage program, Save Our Selves (SOS) Girls' Group, Pathfinderz Boys' Group, Youth Fellowship, Arts Workshops, Leadership Development, Community Collaboration, and Parent/Teen Communications. She also serves as part of the team for church-wide pastoral relations.
She is a 1986 Masters of Divinity graduate of Union Theological Seminary and also received a Masters in Creative Writing from City College of New York and a Bachelor of Arts from Fordham University. She recently completed the Doctoral program at New York University, focusing on Family, Marriage and Human Sexuality.
As an educator, Mariah Ann Britton has taught at: New York Theological Seminary, the College of New Rochelle School of New Resources, New York University School of Continuing Education, Writer-in-Residence at Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Intermediate School. She has led numerous workshops on Youth Ministry, Human Sexuality and the Bible, Poetry and Liturgy, and Rites of Passage.
Rev. Britton's writings have appeared in Women's Sermons, New City Voices, Essence Magazine, The American Rag, Conscience Magazine, YES, The Baptist Leader, American Baptist Women, Confirmations, The American Rag, a manual for youth development The Rites of Passage Institute and a solo book With Fire. She served as Editor-in-Chief for Long Journey Home, an anthology.
