Increased focus on nurse sensitive indicators is placing higher demands on nurse managers to measure the impact of professional role competency and decision-making by RNs on patient outcomes creating increased need for system clarity. Role based managers can harness and leverage the powerful decision making role of the professional RN and maximize the impact of those decisions on outcomes through an effective staffing system that supports a professional role vs. task based orientation, and 'right nurse/right patient' staffing assignments. In this presentation, Maria O'Rourke, RN, DNSc, will discuss how ensuring role-based professional management practice positions organizations for excellence as role clarity and role competency become central to any discussion on the appropriate use of the RN role in health care today and in the future.
