Director of the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program at the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature Maria Eugenia Arreola Director of the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program at the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature Maria Eugenia Arreola is the Director of the Mesoamerican Reef Leadership Program (MAR Leadership) at the Mexican Fund for the Conservation of Nature (FMCN). MAR Leadership seeks to accelerate conservation impacts in the MAR ecoregion by empowering emerging leaders to implement high impact projects that address the main threats facing the region's coastal and marine ecosystems. Maria also collaborates with the Kanan Kay Alliance as the Coordinator of the Capacity-Building Strategy. The Kanan Kay Alliance is a multi-sector initiative working towards establishing an effective network of no take zones in Quintana Roo, Mexico to allow the recuperation of artisanal fisheries. Maria has more than 15 years of experience designing and coordinating capacity-building programs in the environmental field. Prior to joining FMCN in 2009, she worked eight years at the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), in the Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (in Mexico City) and UNEP's Headquarters (Nairobi). In UNEP, Maria coordinated the development of integrated environmental assessments (GEO) and developed capacity building tools.

She has more than 15 years of experience designing and coordinating capacity-building programs in environmental topics. Prior to joining FMCN, she worked for 8 years in the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP)), of which 5 years were spent in UNEP's Regional Office for Latin America and the Caribbean (in Mexico City), and 3 years at UNEP's Headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.
