Maria Ann Alexander
was born in Louisville, Kentucky, raised in Tampa, Florida and has served law enforcement in Missouri, Oklahoma and California before her
recent arrival to Tennessee.
Ms. Alexander draws on over twenty-two years of law enforcement experience.She was appointed as the first female police chief in the state of Oklahoma and Tennessee (of departments serving over 10,000 in population). Maria began her law enforcement career as a Military Police Officer with the US Army.She served as a patrol MP and as a handler/trainer for the narcotics/explosive detector canines during four years of active duty at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.After a successful military tour, Chief Alexander began her civilian law enforcement career as a communications officer for the Rolla, Missouri Police Department.
Over the next ten years, she
was promoted through the ranks of patrol officer, patrol sergeant, lieutenant and Division Commander.In 1993, she accepted a position as the Chief of Police for the City of Owasso, Oklahoma where she served for six years. In 1999, Ms. Alexander accepted a position as the Assistant Director with the National Center for Women in Policing in Los Angeles, California where she worked with law enforcement agencies throughout the country.In 2000, Maria was appointed as Chief of Police for the Germantown Police Department where she served for almost two years before joining the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission in 2002. Chief Alexander continues a concurrent career in the law enforcement arena and the military US Army Reserves.She
serves as the Operations NCOIC in a Chemical Battalion in Little Rock, Arkansas.She
provides instruction in the area of Nuclear, Biological and Chemical Defense, Military Police and Advanced Military Leadership.She is a Master Sergeant and has over 23 years of military service.Additionally, Chief Alexander provides seminars to civilian and law enforcement audiences in the area of Domestic Violence Awareness, Effective Communications and Creative Problem Solving. Chief Alexander received her Master's Degree through the University of Oklahoma and has plans to pursue her Ph.D. through the University of Memphis. Maria
husband J.B. have one son and a granddaughter who reside in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
