Maria Alexander, a spokesman for the Memphis-Shelby Crime Commission, said the TBI's statistics are mostly used internally by law enforcement officials. If business executives seek out those statistics, they are probably astute enough to understand the differences between the methods, Alexander said.

Using a reporting method that's considered cutting edge actually works in the city's favor, Alexander said.
Local tourism and business recruitment officials say they aren't aware of any problems related to the new method.

Maria Alexander, former Germantown police chief who now works with the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission, said the map will put the crime data out in the public in a different way for the first time.

"We're excited because we will be able to look at the data, and right now it is hard to focus on an issue if you don't know what it is," she said.
Downen said launching the crime map site was one of two big projects he wanted to complete before he retires in January. The other project is getting hand-held computers into the hands of officers, so they can easily access crime data and write computer-generated traffic tickets.
To access the crime map residents should go to the Memphis Police Department Web site at http://www.memphispolice.org/, then click on the CrimeMapper logo.Officials recommend using Internet Explorer 5.0 version or a newer browser. The Netscape browser may not work to view the site.
