Marcos De Ros - Pièces de Résistance CD/ DVD Review

Marcos De Ros - Pièces de Résistence
Marcos De Ros is a Brazilian guitarist and composer. One of Brazil's top players, he has his own Signature Guitar, from C Peruzzo guitars, as well as a Signature distortion pedal from Wavebox. An accomplished teacher and clinician, he has also worked with Chops from Hell, to release a number of instructional works. Marcos recently released a dual CD and DVD package, entitled Pièces de Résistence, which features a number of specially written tracks which fuse elements of shred, classical music and Brazilian Rhythms such as Choro, Milonga, Samba and Baiao. Do Fret takes a look at Pièces de Résistence. The DVD features Marcos, along with pianist Éder Bergozza, in an intimate, small concert setting. It's very well filmed and the sound is excellent. The tracks, of which there are 17, were all pre-written, with just a couple of piano improvisations here and there. Marcos and Éder are true virtuosos, with immense chops, a highly developed melodic and harmonic sense and the taste and restraint to lay back where necessary. The music is both complicated, and yet highly enjoyable. The musicians look like they are having a good time, and that shared passion is quite infectious! Marcos is a phenomenally talented player and musician, with stunning technique, he employs multi-string sweeps, speed picking, deft and imaginative tapping, as well as some quite beautiful more laid back clean playing. The tracks range from upfront shred, to classical, to more traditional Brazilian - there are even a couple of tracks that have a film score feel to them - this is alluded to in the sleeve notes to the package, where Marcos lists the great Danny Elfman as an influence, along with names that are more familiar with shred fans, like Paul Gilbert and Jason Becker.
As well this, Marcos uses his guitar to evoke more traditional Brazilian rhythms and melodies, also including a nod to Charlie Chaplin, with his tune The Little Tramp, which shows that his influences are far and wide ranging.

Marcos De Ros
Marcos De Ros began his musical career when he was 9 years old, copying some harmonies and melodies at the guitar. When he was 10, he started musical lessons and studying some hours a day. In 1985, at the age of 14, he used to present his first shows with his rock band, named “GARGANTHUAE”, and in 1988 he played in several bands and performed different kinds of music, from jazz-fusion to thrash metal. At this time, he began violin classes. In 1989, he was hired as violinist at the “Orquestra de Câmara de Caxias do Sul”.
In 1991, he made up the power trio “DE ROS” with Sandro Stecanela (drums) and Fábio Alves (bass). With this group of musicians, he recorded some demos and presented some shows in Rio Grande do Sul and as well in the center of the country.
In 1992, he performed as a guest musician in the “RADICCI” record, by the label “Official Bootlegs”. In 1994, he released his first record with “DE ROS” band, the independent CD “AD DEI GLORIAM”, which has gotten an excellent repercussion both, from the public and from the critic.
Moreover, Marcos did several concerts as a soloist musician, as well as with Akashic.
Nowadays, Marcos is still touring Brazil and South America with guitar wizard Pablo Soler.
Marcos De Ros uses Dean Markley's Vintage Electric Reissue MED and Blue Steel Electric REG.
