After many discussions, the group decided to pursue the venue and attempt to raise funds through donations, before they were hit with another financial blow in September, three weeks before auditions, according to music director Marcia Pittman.
In an email, the Laxson Auditorium production team informed the group it would no longer be able to use Chico State keyboards, despite doing so for the past seven concerts, Pittman said. "It was like 'wow, what are we going to do now?' Logistically this concert is a nightmare to produce because we have to have 16 pianos, so we were scrambling," Pittman said. Fortunately, a new concert teacher in the association happened to be the pastor's wife at Neighborhood Church, and they were able to negotiate the use of the building, which would hold all performers, teaching staff and audience, she said. Coordinators showed no visible strain during Saturday rehearsals as they led the students in groups through boogie, blues, swing and ragtime music in conjunction with this year's theme, "All That Jazz." "It's so different from a normal piano concert & it was like a piano orchestra, which is not a common thing that you'll see," said Pittman.
