Member Spotlight - Marci Hicks, University of Kentucky
This month, we meet Marci Hicks, Associate Director for Advancement and Director of Development for the College of Agriculture, University of Kentucky (UK). Marci joined UK in May 2001 and the College of Agriculture in 2005.
Our featured member grew up on what used to be a typical small Kentucky farm, raising beef cattle and tobacco. Marci's parents were full time educators and full time farmers. "I'm not sure that I've ever understood part-time farming - teaching and farming both seem to be a full-time commitment! she said. Marci was active in 4-H, serving as state secretary in her final active year. She graduated from UK with a degree in Agriculture Economics a few years ago and went back to school to study for her masters at Vanderbilt University in Higher Education Administration. While she thought she would become an extension agent, she's glad that she fell into the higher education advancement field. "Although we remain in the background, we make a difference in the lives of students and in the future of our institutions," Marci explained.
Throughout her 20 years in advancement, Marci notes that it's difficult to pinpoint the one area that is the most rewarding. "I enjoy working with students and am glad that even as the chief development officer for our college, I can find time with our students. If you don't stay connected with current students, I believe that your success as a fundraiser is limited," Marci said.
"Additionally, I have made wonderful friends along the way with our donors. It is hard to separate the job from the relationship, especially when you work for your alma mater," she said.
Regardless of the type of gift, if we can bring together the beneficiary, with the donor, to witness the good that comes from such an investment, we are doing our job in the right and ethical way," Marci said. "Advancement is not about personal gain, but moving forward your institution and improving the lives your institution touches. And, in agriculture and life sciences, our programs touch lives far beyond our campus gates," she concluded.
A NAADA member for five years, Marci and her UK team will host the 2012 annual NAADA Conference. "I take great pride in the fact that UK is a founding member of NAADA and I'm honored to continue to serve NAADA in the footsteps of Paul Appel and Mike Richey," Marci said.
Marci also is an active CASE member, and she said the difference between the two organizations is that with NAADA, she can share challenges and issues facing land-grant institutions and in particular, Colleges of Agriculture. "While I can discuss issues pertaining to development challenges with my colleagues serving other academic colleges at UK, they do not begin to understand the importance of agriculture to our state, the importance of extension to our state and to our institution nor do they have the challenges of meeting the demands of the broad constituency of our college with 18 different degree programs, a world renown equine research program, the cooperative extension service, and the state botanical garden," she said.
"The College of Agriculture is the State of Kentucky; we have an enormous responsibility to the citizens of our state to continue programs that focus on the needs of the commonwealth. Private funding is truly the only mechanism we have now, and in the future, to continue the good work of our students, faculty, and extension professionals. We can no longer rely on our individual state governments to underwrite our programs," Marci continued. "My NAADA colleagues face the similar issues in their respective states. Even if there aren't easy answers or solutions to our challenges, at least we can exchange advice and support with colleagues from across the nation."
Marci, and her husband (who she met at UK!), operate a purebred Limousin and Angus herd, with their three children having shown cattle in 4-H. She serves on the Woodford County 4-H Council and the Kentucky 4-H Foundation Board; she also is a member of the Kentucky Cattlemen's Association, Kentucky Limousin Breeder's Association, and a retired Kentucky Junior Limousin Association Advisor. Marci also chaired the Lexington Junior League Horse Show, the largest outdoor Saddlebred show in the world and one of the legs of the Triple Crown of Saddlebred Shows. It's the organization's annual fundraiser.
