Particularly given the mills vicinity to our White Mesa community, we are very concerned about the difference between the high levels of radon-222 emissions calculated by our environmental department, and the low levels assumed by regulators, Heart said.

"This water should help our tribes for a long time," said Ute Mountain Ute Council Treasurer Manuel Heart as he looked across Lake Nighthorse from atop the dam that will remain off limits to the public.

And when the recreation plan is complete and parts of the lake are opened to the general public, many others, including some of the project's early opponents, also will benefit.

Manuel Heart, chairman of the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Council, said technology is evolving rapidly, leaving American Indian and other area students behind.

"We are moving at a pace right now where we need to start gearing up for new technology," Heart said."It's already ahead of us right now."
Heart also pointed to improved relations between the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and Re-1 district officials. However, it's time to move further, he said.
"Now we need to take it to the next level," Heart said.
The Esther Martinez bill, which passed through Congress and received President Bush's signature last year, should help tribes revitalize American Indian language curriculum in schools. But there is little or no funding for it, Heart said.
"Tribes need to get together and say, ‘Let's look at adding more money,'" he said.
"Education is primary. It's a priority for us here today," Heart added.
