Tirkey (43) from RSP was sworn in as the Minister of State for PWD on Tuesday, replacing Manohar Tirkey who was elected to the Lok Sabha from Kalchini in Jalpaiguri district. Kshiti Goswami of RSP is the Minister-in-Charge of PWD.
A graduate from Ranchi University, Tirkey became a member of the RSP in the year 1998. Born in Kumargram in Jalpaiguri, Tirkey had always been involved in trade union movement in the tea gardens at Jalpaiguri.
It was from the trade union movement that he joined the RSP. Salip Topko, his cousin, introduced him to politics, said the newly inducted minister.

Tirkey was elected from Kuamargram in Jalpaiguri district in the 2001 Assembly elections for the first time and became a Minister of State for PWD. He was again elected in 2006 but this time it was Manohar Tirkey who became a Minister of State for PWD.

"There is no question of accepting their proposal as we are demanding a minimum daily wage of Rs 88," said Manohar Tirkey, a former RSP minister and general secretary of the Dooars Tea Garden Workers' Union.
The workers now get a daily minimum wage of Rs 45.90.Tirkey said in the last agreement between workers and owners signed on April 1, 2004, there was a raise of Rs 11.
