An FYI on the FDA's Latest Findings on ALCL and Breast Implants | The Plastic Surgery Channel

Dr. Maggie DiNome, a breast cancer surgeon and associate clinical professor of surgery at UCLA Medical Center, says women with implants should know that it's a very rare form of cancer.
"They have only documented 300 or so cases of this. We're talking about 300 out of 10 million women worldwide with implants, so it's very, very rare and it's very curable if you were to get it," Dr. DiNome told CBS News, noting the implant would be taken out in most cases. She also cautioned that the symptoms of implant-linked ALCL, such as one breast being more swollen than the other, can be due to other issues with an implant not related to cancer, including infection or trauma.

Changemaker: Dr. Maggie DiNome, MD, FACS Changemaker: Dr. Maggie DiNome, MD, FACS Maggie DiNome, MD, FACS, had a childhood shaped by her father's death. Though she was only six years old at the time, she decided to become a physician "while hanging around hospital waiting rooms" during her father's treatment. Her life has been inspired by her mother, a Korean immigrant, who raised three young children after she became a widow at age 31. "My mother taught me strength and persistence. She went back to school, worked nights, and made me believe I could do anything if I worked hard," Dr. DiNome says. "Because of her, I never felt like I missed out on anything." Dr. DiNome is the current Chief of General Surgery at Saint John's Hospital. She is a Board Certified General Surgeon, who focuses her clinical expertise on cancer surgery and advanced laparoscopic techniques. As a Fellow of the Society for Surgical Oncology and a member of the American Society of Breast Surgeons, Dr. DiNome is particularly dedicated to caring for patients with breast and colorectal cancer. Dr. DiNome graduated from Yale University in 1989 and received her medical degree from Duke University Medical School in 1994. She completed her internship and residency in general surgery at Brigham and Women's Hospital of Harvard Medical School, was a clinical fellow of surgery at Harvard University, and did a two-year cancer research fellowship at UCLA. In her Santa Monica private practice, Dr. DiNome specializes in laparoscopic colon cancer surgery in tribute to her father, and breast cancer surgery because so many women are affected by the disease. She is passionate about finding a cure, something she works tirelessly for, both on and off the job. She is the founder and chair of The Power of PINK fundraiser that featured Grammy award-winning artist P!NK in a private performance to benefit the Margie Petersen Breast Center at St. John's Health Center, where Dr. DiNome serves as Associate Director and Chief of General Surgery. The first event was so successful that it will be repeated annually. (Source: Frederick M. Brown/Getty Images) Dr. DiNome is also an adjunct faculty member of the John Wayne Cancer Institute and is writing a book on breast cancer to help patients understand the disease and navigate their way toward a cure. A member of the Cooperative of American Physicians, Inc. (CAP), Dr DiNome served on CAP's Surgical Risk Assessment Peer Review Committee helping members reduce their risks. She brought to the committee an expertise in minimally invasive surgery and took back to her practice "new things I learned from every case we review," she says. Dr. DiNome describes herself as the kind of person who tackles things head on and wants to fix problems right away. She loves scuba diving and traveling. She would one day like to return to abstract oil painting, dive the Red Sea, and repeat a cross-country trip with her children that she took years ago with her husband.
