"When the Worldwide Service Project came along, I got the idea that the STAR Foundation might be willing to support it," says Mac Shivers, a member of the Wilton Kiwanis club and secretary for the STAR Foundation."The organization works to support mentally retarded people. But if STAR could do something to prevent retardation, that's even better."
...
"I put my Kiwanis hat on," says Mac, "and Bill put together a fine application for a grant."
At first, the Kiwanians were going to ask for a $500 or $1,000 contribution, but then they decided to ask for more-$25,000.
It didn't take members of the STAR Foundation board long to agree to the Kiwanians' request. But they voiced one concern. They wanted to add local flavor to their gift. And that came when the STAR Foundation chose to make its contribution in honor of Kiwanian-and longtime STAR supporter: Mac Shivers.

In Memory of Mac Shivers, Who Continues to 'Light the Way'
In April, STAR lost a longtime friend and supporter with the passing of 92-year-old Mac Shivers, a remarkable and accomplished man who spoke 13 languages and was dedicated to his commitment to STAR.Mac gave tirelessly of his time and efforts on STAR's behalf for thirty years. From the time that he became involved with STAR in the early 1970s, his activities benefited participants, families and staff.Following his retirement from Exxon, he volunteered to oversee th e construction of STAR Center. He remained active in STAR ever since, serving for years as the Treasurer of the Board of Directors and most recently as a Board member of The STAR Foundation. When Shivers House on Bayne Street in Norwalk opened its doors to STAR participants, the group home was named after Mac in honor of all his many accomplishments for STAR.is Harold McGraw III, Chairman and CEO of The McGraw-Hill Companies.
