Dr. M. Cary Collins
After earning his MBA at Virginia Tech Dr. Collins returned to First Community as a Bank Operations Specialist migrating newly acquired banks to the holding company software architecture. In late 1984, he joined First Community Bancshares’ principal rival, The Flat Top National Bank, as the Trust Investments Officer, managing roughly $300M in trust assets. He completed his doctorate at The University of Georgia in Athens in 1990 and accepted a position with The University of Tennessee as an Assistant Professor of Finance in 1989, becoming successfully tenured in 1996. Dr. Collins became the Director of the Financial Institutions Center at The University of Tennessee in 1996. Also in 1996 Dr. Collins also started Compliance Solutions, LLC, as a fair lending and fair pricing software company. In 2001, he was named a William B. Stokely Distinguished Scholar in Finance, having previously held a “scholar†designation. In mid 2001, his Compliance Solutions, LLC, became Risk Management Solutions, Inc, a Tennessee C Corporation. In 2002, Dr. Collins was named The Home Federal Bank of Tennessee Faculty Fellow in Banking and Finance. In early 2003, Dr. Collins orchestrated the sale of Risk Management Solutions’ technologies to a third-party provider and one year later he negotiated and closed a deal for the migration of RMS’ consulting clients and remaining technologies to ERS Group. In 2004, Dr. Collins joined ERS Group in what would become a 2-year leave of absence from The University of Tennessee. As a Principal in ERS Group, Dr. Collins oversaw the development, marketing, partnering and strategic positioning of ERS Group’s offerings with financial services firms. Having completed two years as a Principal of ERS Group, Dr. Collins became an ERS Group Academic Affiliate, enabling him to spend more time on client projects and to resume his research and teaching duties at The University of Tennessee in August 2006, as an Associate Professor and The Home Federal Bank / David Sharp Professor of Banking and Finance. By December 2006, Dr. Collins had completed his ERS Group Academic Affiliate work and successfully closed out his remaining private equity holdings. In the Summer of 2007, he was invited to create a new entrepreneurship academic program at Bryant University as The Trustee Professor of Entrepreneurship and an Associate Professor of Finance. Dr. Collins accepted the invitation and joined Bryant University on August 1, 2007.
