"It's all about early intervention for children with special needs," said Lynn Slay, director of special services for the district.
Slay said the students work the entire time they're at school, even if they don't realize they are working. "Everything is a teachable moment," she said, from asking who's first when they line up to walk down the hall to the restroom to getting a non-verbal student to point to the picture of what she wants for a snack. While early intervention for special needs students is required by federal law, the Madison County district made the commitment for the preschool, Slay said.
