Instructor Dr. Lynn Schaefer will discuss basic neuroanatomy and illustrate how it relates to vulnerability and the pathology of injury.
She will discuss the different types of brain injuries, including risk factors, causes and the potential cognitive and psychiatric symptoms from intellectual deficits to common mood disorders.
Dr. Schaefer will also focus on the resources available for the management of brain injury as well as prevention methods.

Dr. Lynn A. Schaefer is Director of Neuropsychology at Nassau University Medical Center in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R).Â Here she is actively involved in clinical, research, and teaching activities, and serves as Supervising Neuropsychologist for the APA Accredited Psychology Internship in Psychiatry.
Dr. Schaefer holds academic appointments as Assistant Professor of Clinical PM&R at Stony Brook School of Medicine and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Psychiatry at New York College of Osteopathic Medicine.Â She served as President of the Neuropsychology Division of the New York State Psychological Association in 2011, after serving a three-year term as Treasurer.Â She also served on the New York Neuropsychology Group (NYNG) Board of Directors.Â Nationally, Dr. Schaefer has been on the Education Committee of the National Academy of Neuropsychology, and serves on the Program Committee for Division 40 as well as on the WIN subcommittee.Â She is currently the New York State Association of Neuropsychology (NYSAN) Liaison to NYNG.Â Dr. Schaefer earned her Ph.D. from the City University of New York, in the Neuropsychology subprogram.
Her clinical and research interests include the assessment and remediation of TBI and dementia. Â She has published journal articles and book chapters in these areas and routinely presents at national conferences.Â Dr. Schaefer is an ad hoc journal reviewer for Neuropsychology and Psychology and Aging and is a grant reviewer for the Alzheimer's Association.
