"They were a hugely important species historically and hopefully will be again," said Luther Aadland, river ecologist with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The peak harvest for sturgeon was in 1885, Aadland said, and then the species crashed in Minnesota and across the country. "It coincided with dam construction," Aadland said. In the Red River basin of northwest Minnesota, five of eight dams have been removed and the spawning grounds rebuilt and plans are underway to remove the remaining three dam sites, Aadland said.
