LEADERSHIP - Luke Tendler has been a leader for the Copperheads this season.

This year's Asheboro Copperheads has that group of seasoned players and one player especially that is having a great individual season is Luke Tendler.
In his second season in Asheboro, the rising senior from North Carolina A&T has proved himself as one of the top hitters in the CPL. He currently sits near the top of the league with a .324 batting average and is second in the CPL with five homers on the year.
"I feel like I'm really starting to mature at the plate," Tendler said of his success at the plate this summer. "I go up to the plate looking for fastballs and looking to put them on the barrel of the bat."
Because of his productivity swinging the bat this summer, Tendler was selected as both as an All-Star and being chosen to compete in the CPL hitting challenge. The right fielder came in second out of 12 competitors, trailing just Edenton's Adam Kirsch on Sunday night in the Challenge as he had 14 home runs in the competition.
Tendler's great season for the Copperheads is merely a carry-over from his campaign for the Aggies where he earned third-team Louisville Slugger All-American honors selected by Collegiate Baseball. Playing shortstop for NC A&T, he batted .369 and was fourth in the nation with 25 doubles to help him earn first-team All-MEAC. His impact has been felt in the previous two seasons also as he was named to the Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American team in 2011, and earned second-team All-MEAC honors his sophomore year.
Ever since the age of five when his dad first introduced him to the game of baseball, Tendler has found it to be his favorite sport and the one he also excels at the most.
Tendler's first season in Asheboro did not come up to his standards, but because of the atmosphere and the team around him, he decided to return.
"I loved it here (Asheboro) my first season," he said. "Coming out here every game is always fun."
A fan favorite at McCrary Park, Tendler is often welcomed to the plate with fans and fellow teammates chanting his name.
Now considered a veteran on the CPL team, Tendler has split time in the field between right field and third base, but admits he feels more comfortable in his natural position in the outfield.
...
"Luke is one of, if not the most dominant hitter in the league, and he has really matured over the past two years," Wilson said.
...
Wilson said Tendler is one of his favorite players to coach because of his knowledge of how to approach the game and his ability to rub off on the rest of the lineup.
...
Besides his offensive contributions, energy and a good attitude are some of the characteristics that Tendler said he feels he brings to this team.
Coming into this season, his first goal was to be named to the CPL All-Star team and the veteran can now mark that off his list. As for the rest of this season, Tendler and his fellow Copperheads teammates have wrapped up a West Division first-half championship and are looking to capture their ultimate goal of winning a CPL title, which is well within reach for this experienced squad.
"I just need to keep hitting and doing my part to help us win the CPL championship which is our main goal," Tendler said.
