The excitement was palpable, with a crowd of supporting friars, parishioners, and neighbors standing by to watch as Fr. Luke Clark, O.P., pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas Church, and Fr. Joseph Scordo, O.P., one of his parochial vicars, happily shoved their golden shovels into the pile of dirt ceremonially provided for the occasion.
Augustine DiNoia, O.P. will lead a blessing assisted by the pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas, Rev. Luke Clark, O.P.
The cramped quarters in which the friars currently live make it less than ideal to serve a growing, 2,300-family parish, and the new monastery will provide the space and serenity they need, Pastor Luke Clark said. Four friars currently live in a single-family house on Alderman Road, next to the Alderman Law School House that is "infamous," according to Pastor Clark.
"We've been doing our best to live the religious life, but the facility we have right now doesn't do it," he said.
Father Luke Clark O.P., pastor of St. Thomas Aquinas, says that the Dominicans who are also known as the Order of Preachers (hence the initials O.P. normally follow the names of Dominican clergy) are enjoying a surge in vocations and a priory in Charlottesville will provide a place for at least six of them to live.
"A priory will not only help us in our own religious life, but it will assist the local church and its needs," Father Luke said.
