"We are committed to being a unique resource to Providence," says Louis Fazzano, founder and President of HELP, "by supporting and developing innovative programs that could not otherwise find funding within the constraints of the city's budget ...Our goal is to create innovative, cost effective and sustainable programs. We want the initiatives we support to continue beyond the life of our grant funding." HELP's initiatives focus on three areas: Healthy Schools, Public School Reform, and Housing and Home Environments. Its member institutions currently include Brown University, Johnson & Wales University, The Miriam Hospital, Providence College, Rhode Island Hospital, Rhode Island School of Design, Roger Williams Medical Center and Women and Infants' Hospital.Fazzano is uniquely suited to his role as President of the coalition. At various times, he has served as President of both Rhode Island School of Design and Rhode Island Hospital, as well as Director of the Rhode Island Department of Economic Development. The direct financial contribution of HELP members to support its initiatives exceeds $1 million annually, totaling more than $9 million to date.Since its inception, HELP has also secured another $11 million in leveraged funding from government and philanthropic foundations. "The funds raised and invested by HELP is only one element of our members' contributions to the city of Providence," said Fazzano.Reflecting on HELP's successful experience in a city of 175,000, Louis Fazzano explained, "one of the benefits of being small is that you get to know everybody.Providence Business News, Interview- Louis Fazzano- "HELP for Providence has wisdom at its core."June 11-17, 2001.
