The layoffs began Monday, said Lori Deaton, spokeswoman for the Hartwell hospital.
She would not specify a number, and said some associates might take other positions within the system. The hospital has a total staff of about 974. The cuts will come from both clinical and nonclinical positions, she said. The reduction in force comes "in order to reduce expenses and stem losses," she said, "and will bring us closer to industry benchmarks." Drake had net patient revenue of $57.5 million in fiscal 2010. Preliminary, unaudited numbers show losses of about $14.5 million for fiscal 2010, which ended June 30, 2010, Deaton said. Drake's troubles, Deaton said, stem from lower-than-anticipated patient volumes, slow growth in new programs, loss of county tax levy funds, expenses related to changes in the Health Alliance, and state taxes on hospitals and skilled nursing facilities.
