A native of Asheville, N.C., Angelo grew up in the auto business. His father owned a small chain of transmission repair and rebuilding centers in the Southeast. He'd work with his dad and brothers on the weekends at their business as well as on their family project of restoring a 1950 Ford Club Coupe, but Angelo was drawn early to the "front office" side of the business.
At the University of North Carolina, he got a marketing degree, and his first job was with a small ad agency in Winston-Salem, N.C. Soon Angelo moved to New York and joined the famed J. Walter Thompson agency, working on behalf of consumer-packaged-goods clients such as Trident, Schick and Reynolds Wrap. "That was good experience in the basics of advertising," Angelo recalled.
But he also was interested in high technology and became Associate Media Director for the Compaq computers account for another agency, Ammirati Puris Lintas, in 1997. During that stint the agency picked up the GMC account from General Motors. "I had the opportunity to focus on automotive there," Angelo said, "and that kind of stuck because I could align my personal interest [in the car business] with my professional passion."
After four years, Angelo left Ammirati for Merkley + Partners, also in New York, as Planning Director for the Mercedes-Benz account. During three years in that position and a subsequent four years as agency Media Director, Angelo said, he helped the brand re-burnish flagging perceptions of its quality by American consumers "with a focus on brand building, broader awareness and emphasis on new, dynamic products". At the same time, Angelo was focused on agency new business development and building communication plans for the agency's other accounts.
In the meantime, Angelo had recognized Audi as "one of those brands on the radar that did smart marketing from time to time, but it would come in waves.
