She recently was appointed the first female municipal judge of Moorestown and is holding court once a week.

"Being a judge is one of the highest forms of public service for a lawyer," said Downey, 48, a graduate of Temple University in Philadelphia and Emory Law School in Atlanta.
"I think it's my calling, but first I had to get a feel for what it is like to be a litigant."
The Republican-controlled, bipartisan council unanimously appointed Downey, a former GOP councilwoman, in late June for three years to replace retiring judge Philip J. Iapalucci.
In 2004, Downey
was a councilwoman for eight months but lost an election that year.
