The flu vaccine primarily is recommended for senior citizens, health-care workers, people who live or work with young children, and people with weakened immune systems and long-term diseases, said Liz Norris, flu program coordinator for the Visiting Nurse Association's health services division in Port Huron.

People with heart and lung disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney disease, cancer, HIV or AIDS and other chronic diseases could be hit hard if they catch the flu.
"If they become ill, it exacerbates their illness," Norris said.
...
Norris, with the VNA, said in addition to getting vaccinated, people can ward off the flu and other illnesses by practicing a few good habits.
"Thorough hand washing at any time of year is the prime thing you can do to try to protect yourself from any bacteria or virus," she said.
