Bero resigns from Massena library board
MASSENA — Lisa C. Bero, the last remaining member of the Massena Public Library board of trustees, resigned at Wednesday night’s Town Council meeting. Citing a need for a fresh start at the library, Ms. Bero said she resigned after several weeks of consideration. “I believe new beginnings and a fresh embarkation can be beneficial to the success and productivity of the upcoming formation of the Massena Public Library board of trustees,” she told council members. “Let a new board bring unbiased ideas and decisions to our library.” Ms. Bero’s resignation followed the departures of President John Acton, Vice President Richard Geiser and members Barb DeLine, Pamela Ouimet and Michael Gleason. In her resignation, Ms. Bero said she plans to pursue a master’s degree in psychology in the fall. She alluded to difficulties she had with other board members.

MASSENA — Lisa J. Bero is the only member left on the Massena Public Library board of trustees.
Before leaving, Mr. Acton handed the board of trustees manual over to Ms. Bero. The approximately 15 or so employees and patrons who gathered for the meeting looked on in stunned silence. A week ago, Ms. Bero publicly disclosed misconduct charges pressed against her by Mr. Geiser. Mr. Geiser also contended that Ms. Bero actively participated in a library petition to name Children’s Librarian Elaine A. Dunne-Thayer as the library director, even though Ms. Bero denied doing so to other board members. Mr. Geiser also contended that Ms. Bero actively participated in a library petition to name Children’s Librarian Elaine A. Dunne-Thayer as the library director, even though Ms. Bero denied doing so to other board members. The charges also accuse Ms. Bero of an “inability to function with other members.” Ms. Bero has denied all the charges and said the “impromptu” meeting she had with employees did not breach confidentiality rules. Tuesday night’s special meeting originally was scheduled as a hearing on the charges. Instead, Ms. Bero finds herself alone on the board, and the library has no executive director; Lynn M. Fountain stepped down from that role last week. In their resignation letters, Mr. Acton and Mr. Geiser praised Ms. Fountain’s work in taking the organization to a new level, but both also criticized Ms. Bero and some of the staff. Ms. Bero said she was shocked by the resignations.

That group will create a strategic vision for the Massena Public Library and approve the goals and objectives developed by a separate Strategic Planning Team, whose membership consists of Ms. Fountain, Mr. Acton, Ms. Dunne-Thayer, Ms. Greene, Ms. Reitz and Lisa Bero, a member of the library’s board of trustees.
