"We are going to use the money to purchase what we call a 'lending library of tools,' " said Linda Mehl, RN, of the Belmont County Health Department. "There will be Hepa-Vacs which will help families clean lead dust without letting it emit all through the house, and then also a shrouded planer and sander that will allow them to do remodeling without the dust flying all over the house."

Mehl says lead poisoning can cause everything from hyperactivity to brain damage.

Linda Mehl, director of nursing at the Belmont County Health Department, said, across Ohio and nationwide, there are several other health departments that are out of the season flu vaccine.

Mehl said the reason the vaccine is in short supply is likely the way it's manufactured.
"They use eggs (that) are injected and then they wait for the virus to grow, and then they manufacture the vaccine, so it's a slow process that takes several months," Mehl said.
Mehl said Belmont County has placed an order for more vaccinations but they don't expect a shipment until December. As of Friday, Harrison County had not placed an order to refill supplies there.
Ohio County health officials said they still have a supply of the seasonal flu vaccine and hope to obtain more doses. And while many larger facilities like are out of the seasonal flu vaccines, there is still the possibility that doctors may have a limited supply left.
Mehl said people who have not yet received a seasonal flu vaccination may not be able to get one until flu season is well under way. She said they should follow normal preventative measures like hand washing and covering their mouths when coughing.
