Lily Thomas, PhD, RN
Vice President, System Nursing Research North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System
Lily Thomas, PhD, RN, is the Vice President of System Nursing Research at the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System. In her current role, she is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to promote nursing research and evidence-based practice across the health system. Her focus is on developing a coordinated program of nursing research, facilitating innovations and evidence-based interventions to improve patient care, and patient care delivery systems.
Selected highlights of Dr. Thomas's contributions include coordinating the development of the Collaborative Care Model-an organizational model for operationalizing the philosophy and core values of the health system, as well as an infrastructure for supporting the model and implementing change; developing educational innovations for workforce empowerment; testing the implementation of a standardized shift-to-shift handoff strategy at bedside; and implementing TeamSTEPPS (Team Strategies and Tools to Enhance Performance and Patient Safety) to enhance quality and patient safety. Dr. Thomas has also designed a problem-solving model to enable nurse managers to identify and develop appropriate strategies for optimal patient outcomes. The model has been replicated 70 times with successful outcomes. She is responsible for maximizing research and evidence-based practice capacity by providing educational programs, applying for grant support, mentoring investigators, fostering the dissemination of findings and integration of findings in daily practice, and instigating local and national collaborations.
Dr. Thomas is the Chair of the System Nursing Research and Evidence-Based Council of the North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System; the council has representation from the hospitals in the system, as well as area schools of nursing. Dr. Thomas presents regularly on research and evidence-based interventions at local, regional, and national forums.

Lily Thomas, Ph.D., RN, chairperson of the North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Nursing Research Committee and Director of Nursing Education at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York, said she finds transferring research findings to routine practice, complex and multifaceted.
"The goal is to make decisions based on the best possible evidence," Thomas said. "Much of the research is generated at academic institutions, but the need to answer questions generated in practice is propelling our quest for evidence in clinical practice further."
Thomas said that the goal is to identify the best available research evidence and implement it in practice for best patient outcomes, rather than rely on tradition, authority, or ritual as we did in our past.
It is challenging ever evolving and there are numerous steps required. Committed nursing leadership, integration, implementation and information are essential for clinical change strategies to occur, Thomas said.

Previous time and motion studies have shown that nurses spend about 20 to 30 percent of their time with patients, up to 50 percent of their time on documentation and walk miles during their shift, said Lily Thomas, PhD, RN, vice president of nursing research for the North Shore-LIJ Health System."The results of this study will add to existing information to provide an evidence-based design to create the ideal nursing unit, which will improve efficiency and drive better patient care and safety," she said.
