YONKERS, NY - - January 18, 2014 -- City Council President Liam J. McLaughlin (right) and his colleagues on the Yonkers City Council today called for passage of a home rule request creating a Department of Education in the City of Yonkers.
"I have been a long-time proponent of establishing a Department of Education in the city," McLaughlin said.
"We owe it to our kids to build a Department of Education under the supervision of the Mayor with oversight of the council," McLaughlin said. "I will work with the mayor and my council colleagues to lobby our state delegation for passage of this necessary reform in the weeks ahead as a standalone measure, or as part of the state budget."

absolutely, Liam your using this moment to do what? Another BS political tactic!

Term limits - thought to be an issue that was settled in Yonkers - raised it's ugly arm up from the grave this week when the Republican-led Yonkers City Council voted 4-3 to extend the terms of Majority Leader Liam McLaughlin and 6th District Council Person Dee Barbato because the Charter Revision Commission that proposed staggered terms goofed.
The Yonkers City Council Democrats have asked the Inspector General to rule as to whether or not some of their Republican colleagues can vote on a proposed law destroying the intent of voter imposed term limits --- specifically regarding Dee Barbato and Liam McLaughlin who would benefit from such a law change.
A council committee minimally debated the issue of extending term limits for two of its members (Dee Barbato and Liam McLaughlin) in an attempt to prevent Republican party primaries this year for City Council President (Barbato to challenge current holder Richard Martinelli and McLaughlin could challenge the GOPs candidate for City Judge).

Quoted is City Council Majority Leader Liam McLaughlin, responding to the contention that questions over the transfer of property rights had linkage to the mid-1980s federal desegregation ruling of Federal Judge Leonard Sand:
Liam McLaughlin, president of Tara Circle, was unimpressed by the suggestion that Tara's halls might be vulnerable to the '87 court ruling.
"I don't think this has any merit," McLaughlin said."Alder Mansion is on the register of historic buildings and is not suitable for housing."
McLaughlin is an attorney and Republican majority leader on the Yonkers City Council.
As it turns out, the matter of Alder Mansion and the court ruling was not raised by a rival Democratic member of the council, but a GOP colleague of McLaughlin's.
McLaughlin said that Alder Mansion was located in an area designated as a college and university zone.It was not the kind of property the court order was intended to protect, he said.
McLaughlin has also taken the position that court permission was not necessary for Tara's purchase of Alder Mansion because a court-appointed housing monitor was involved in the original 1995 purchase of the property by the city of Yonkers.
I have been monitoring the email coming into my email box dealing with the issue of today: the City Council is thinking about extending the eight year service terms of Dee Barbato and Liam McLaughlin if both run and win election this year to 10 years because if they win their council district elections, they can only serve two of their new four year terms because of term limits.
The Republican City Committee doesn't want current City Council Member Liam McLaughlin running for City Court judge this year; it doesn't want Mayor Phil Amicone to even think of nominating him if a vacancy opens up before election on the court; the party wants Charley Wood, a Republican Ward Leader, to run in that spot this year; the Republicans are trying to prevent a primary.
While McLaughlin hasn't made a decision as to whether he would support this law change, the rest of the Republicans on the council are lining up like lemmings to violate the public confidence in their government, again.
But the Yonkers Republican City Committee, an illegitimately led political organization, wants the City Council to OK extending term limits for Council People Dee Barbato and Liam McLaughlin as to prevent other political headaches for the committee that couldn't shoot straight. They don't want primaries in either the City Council President's race (Barbato would challenge incumbent Richard Martinelli) or for city judge (McLaughlin would challenge the candidate the party puts up).
So they introduced legislation to the council that would, in effect, throw out the city's term limit law to protect Barbato and McLaughlin from running in primaries.
We won't get it from either Barbato or McLaughlin or Martinelli, all would benefit from this term limits change.
