Mr. Lewis Aaron, Founder and Director - Fund Consultants LLC - Conference Chairman

But I believe Scott brought something ... [cached]

But I believe Scott brought something new to the table, something that had been hinted at by Lewis Aaron, the conference chairman and the founder of Fund Consultants.

In his opening remarks at the conference, Aaron took a look back at the performance of open-end funds and CEFs in 2011. Using Morningstar data and categories, he laid out the superior total returns logged for CEFs during the year and also for the three-year period ended Dec. 31, 2011.

After hearing the case for Asia ... [cached]

After hearing the case for Asia and emerging markets, Aaron provided us with the reasons investors should choose CEFs over open-end funds. First and foremost is performance. Over the five-year annualized period ended Dec. 31, 2011, Aaron showed that all equity CEFs, on average, outperformed all equity-invested open-end funds (a loss of 0.4% versus a loss of 1.0%). Looking at a sector breakdown of CEFs versus open-end funds (using Morningstar categories), 18 out of 27 CEF category averages outperformed their open-end peers over the five-year annualized period. Notably, the China region, diversified Pacific/Asia, diversified emerging markets, Pacific/Asia ex-Japan stocks, and Latin America stock categories were among the outperformers.

Looking at fixed-income funds, over the five-year annualized period ended Dec. 31, 2011, CEFs, on average, gained 4.4% while open-end funds, on average, gained 3.8%. Aaron, again, showed that most fixed-income CEF categories (19 out of 25) beat open-end counterparts over this time period. Among the outperformers was the emerging-markets bond category.
Aaron believes the better performance is derived mostly from the funds' abilities to employ leverage.
Joining me on the panel were John Cole Scott, portfolio manager at CEF Advisors, Donald Amstad, head of fixed income at Aberdeen Investment Management, and Lewis Aaron, founder of Fund Consultants, LLC.
