Passing of PGWP Lew Reed
Lewis H. Reed Grand Worthy President 1974-1975
Passed away on December 29, 2006
A GREAT EAGLE LEAVES USCalendar year 2006 ended on a very sad note for the Fraternal Order of Eagles with the passing of Past Grand Worthy President Lewis H. Reed on December 29, at the age of 79.
Ever since he
joined Aerie No.150
in Burlington, Iowa, 61 years ago, Lew Reed
was a stalwart Eagle wholly dedicated to the advancement of our fraternal and humanitarian goals. He
served in most of the chairs of his
home Aerie, and then as Iowa State and Central Regional President before beginning his
ascent up the rungs of the Grand Aerie in 1970 as a member of the Board of Grand Trustees. In 1974, Lew was elected Grand Worthy President of the FOE at our International Convention held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. His
year at the helm of Eagledom was marked by tremendous progress in membership and the institution of new Aeries. When his
term was up, he
was tapped by his
Eagle mentors Bob Hansen and Art Ehrmann to continue his
service to Eagledom as Grand Aerie Financial Advisor and Membership Director.
Thus began a 24-year tenure as major domo of operations at Grand Aerie Headquarters in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, during which time Lew
was briefly tapped by the Board of Grand Trustees to serve as the first and only Chief Operating Officer of the FOE
retired in 1998 and returned to live in Burlington, there was no more popular Eagle anywhere than the man jocularly known as "The Silver Fox."
"I have thoroughly enjoyed working for the betterment of our organization and working with many of the finest people that have come down the Eagle trail," said Lew
at that time.
..."I am proud to call Lew my good friend, and I am equally proud of what he contributed to our organization," said Grand Worthy President Bill Loffer.
The funeral service for Lew
will be held on Friday, January 5, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. in Lunning Chapel
